Doing Business in Walhalla

Hospitality Tax (HTAX)

A 1% hospitality fee and a 1% hospitality tax (2% total) apply to sales of prepared meals and beverages sold in establishments within the City.

Local Accommodations Tax (ATAX)

A uniform 3% tax applies to the gross proceeds derived from the rental of any accommodation furnished to transients within the City (1.5% to the City of Walhalla; 1.5% to Oconee County).

When Is Payment Due?

Hospitality and accommodations taxes must be remitted monthly. Payments received or postmarked after the 20th are subject to an automatic penalty of 10% of the total amount due.

Festival & Event Vendors

The City hosts events throughout the year such as Jeep Fest, Independence Fest, Hispanic Heritage Festival, and Merchants Market. Event vendors must have a City of Walhalla business license for any events held in the city limits, or pay a city vendor fee that includes the business license fee. A Mobile Food Vendor Permit and insurance information are required for all mobile food vendors, whether for a special event or an annual permit. Anyone participating in a city event (including bands, DJs, and food trucks) is required to have a business license.

Event Vendor Form

Any vendor doing business directly with the City must submit a W-9 form so the City can properly report payments to the IRS.

Applying for a Special Event Permit

Any outside organization hosting a public event in Walhalla needs a Special Event Permit before the event can be approved. Here’s what to know before you apply.

⏱ Submit at least 60 days before your event

Applications received fewer than 60 days out may not be processed in time. Plan accordingly.

What you’ll need

  1. Completed Special Event Permit Application
  2. Non-refundable $100 application fee
  3. Proof of $1,000,000 liability insurance naming the City of Walhalla as co-insured
  4. All vendors (including entertainers) must hold a current Walhalla business license
  5. Food vendors must additionally register for and collect the city’s 2% hospitality tax

  • City Green — N Catherine Street & Main Street (next to Arby’s)
  • Brown Square — Main Street & College Street
  • City facilities (Depot, Old St. John’s, Recreation Facilities) — these also require a separate RecDesk reservation

Water Service Changes

Water service must be started, stopped, or transferred in person at City Hall. Walk-ins welcome as no appointment is needed.

Starting service

Bring the following to the office:

  • Valid government-issued photo ID
  • Renters: your signed lease agreement or a completed New Tenant Form (available at the office)
  • Businesses: also bring proof of passing Fire Marshal inspection

Bring a valid photo ID. If you’re a renter, the property owner may also need to be notified — confirm with the office if unsure.

Apply for a Utility Tap

New water and sewer tap applications must be submitted in person and require sign-off from both the City and OJRSA before a tap can be approved.

How to apply

  1. Download and complete both forms below
  2. Bring completed forms to the Water Department at 206 N Church Street
  3. Contact OJRSA separately to confirm capacity at your address as  the City cannot approve the tap until OJRSA signs off
  4. Allow additional processing time for OJRSA review
