Building & Planning / Apply for a Building Permit

Apply for a Building Permit

Planning a new building, an addition, or a structural change in Walhalla? Here’s what the process actually involves, and what to have ready before you apply.

You'll Need a Zoning Permit First

No building permit will be issued without an approved Zoning Permit. Zoning Permit applications are typically processed within 3-5 business days (Monday-Friday, excluding holidays). Apply for your Zoning Permit before applying for the building permit itself.

What Requires a Building Permit

Adding to an existing building or making structural alterations
Changing a building or land's use
Constructing or expanding a new residential, commercial, or industrial structure
Demolishing a building
Subdividing land
Installing or replacing signage

How Permits Are Processed

The City of Walhalla uses a third-party Building Official for plan reviews, building permits, permit fees, inspections, and Certificates of Occupancy. Contractors performing work within City limits must hold a current Walhalla business license before beginning work.

Land Disturbance Permits

A Land Disturbance Permit (LDP) is required for any land-disturbing activity of 5,000 square feet or more, including subdivision and PUD developments. If the land-disturbing activity impacts two or more acres, the application must also include a natural resources map (identifying soils, topography, tree cover, waterways, and other natural resources) and a detailed construction sequencing plan covering clearing, rough grading, utility and building construction, and final grading and landscaping, including expected timing for each phase.

Forms & Applications

Building and zoning-related forms are available on the City’s Permits & Forms page.
