Boards & Commissions

Walhalla’s boards and commissions give residents a direct voice in shaping the city, from zoning decisions to downtown development and beautification. Members are appointed by City Council and serve on a volunteer basis.

Guides Walhalla’s long-range growth: reviews rezoning requests, subdivision plats, and Certificate of Appropriateness applications in the historic district, and makes recommendations to City Council on the Comprehensive Plan 2045.

  • Meets: As needed to hold public hearings on rezoning, subdivision, and Comprehensive Plan matters; hearings are posted on the City Calendar as they’re scheduled.
  • Seats: Members appointed by City Council.Ā 
  • Staff liaison: City Planner / Zoning Administrator
  • To bring a matter before this board: Submit a rezoning, subdivision, or Comprehensive Plan request through the Planning Department. Historic district changes require a Certificate of Appropriateness application.

Hears appeals of the Zoning Administrator’s decisions and requests for variances or special exceptions to the City’s zoning ordinance. The Board can enforce, overturn, or modify a decision, but only on whether the ordinance was applied correctly.

  • Meets: As needed to hold public hearings on filed appeals; hearings are posted on the City Calendar as they’re scheduled.
  • Seats: Members appointed by City Council.Ā 
  • Staff liaison: City Planner / Zoning Administrator
  • To bring a matter before this board: File a zoning appeal within 10 days of the Zoning Administrator’s decision. Contact the Planning Department to begin the process.

Established under Ordinance 2023-16 to hear grievances relating to the City’s adopted building codes.

  • Meets: Dates and times are set upon appointment of the board by City Council; check the City Calendar for scheduled hearings.
  • Seats: Five (5) members appointed by City Council, drawn from design professionals, contractors, or other building-industry representatives per the ordinance.
  • Staff liaison: Building Official (also serves as the board’s secretary and record-keeper)
  • To bring a matter before this board: File an appeal of a building code decision through the Building Official’s office.

Supports the revitalization and economic vitality of Downtown Walhalla, including awarding Uniquely Walhalla grants for downtown improvement projects.

Register Your Bees

Applying for a Special Event Permit

Any outside organization hosting a public event in Walhalla needs a Special Event Permit before the event can be approved. Here’s what to know before you apply.

⏱ Submit at least 60 days before your event

Applications received fewer than 60 days out may not be processed in time. Plan accordingly.

What you’ll need

  1. Completed Special Event Permit Application
  2. Non-refundable $100 application fee
  3. Proof of $1,000,000 liability insurance naming the City of Walhalla as co-insured
  4. All vendors (including entertainers) must hold a current Walhalla business license
  5. Food vendors must additionally register for and collect the city’s 2% hospitality tax

  • City Green — N Catherine Street & Main Street (next to Arby’s)
  • Brown Square — Main Street & College Street
  • City facilities (Depot, Old St. John’s, Recreation Facilities) — these also require a separate RecDesk reservation

Water Service Changes

Water service must be started, stopped, or transferred in person at City Hall. Walk-ins welcome as no appointment is needed.

Starting service

Bring the following to the office:

  • Valid government-issued photo ID
  • Renters: your signed lease agreement or a completed New Tenant Form (available at the office)
  • Businesses: also bring proof of passing Fire Marshal inspection

Stopping service

Bring a valid photo ID. If you’re a renter, the property owner may also need to be notified — confirm with the office if unsure.

Apply for a Utility Tap

New water and sewer tap applications must be submitted in person and require sign-off from both the City and OJRSA before a tap can be approved.

How to apply

  1. Download and complete both forms below
  2. Bring completed forms to the Water Department at 206 N Church Street
  3. Contact OJRSA separately to confirm capacity at your address asĀ  the City cannot approve the tap until OJRSA signs off
  4. Allow additional processing time for OJRSA review
